A survivor of the Shoah, Adam Lapid immigrated to Israel, working as a private detective. Tasked with a seemingly hopeless case, Lapid has a soft spot for a mother seeking her missing son. He finds himself attempting to untangle a web of secrets, lies, and deception that could put him in mortal danger.
This is the first book in a seven book series and I’m looking forward to reading more from Dunsky. The execution of this PI mystery is excellent. Dunsky brings exceptional depth to his cast of characters. They seem to leap off the page as if real.
The setting of this book is very interesting with the state of Israel still in conception and infancy. The history of the time, along with the very messy politics, is almost a character unto itself. The book is clearly well researched.
I am looking forward to continuing in this series. If the other books in this series are as well presented as this one, Dunksy has created a bingeable series I very much look forward to indulging in.

Well, I am pleased to say I have completed my reading goal for 2022. 75 titles complete in just over three months. Last year, I missed completing 100 books by less than 5 titles. But it looks like I should manage it easily this year.
First up on my list this week is 365 Days of Gutsy Women. This book highlights the stories and accomplishments of women from a variety of historical periods, backgrounds, etc. I was honored to receive a signed copy from the author in exchange for my honest review. Said review will be coming next week.
Also on my list is the latest release from Rachel Barenbaum, Atomic Anna. I thoroughly enjoyed A Bend in the Stars by this author. She was also the first author to comment on a post of mine on Instagram. Needless to say, I
became an instant fan. Her new release involves time travel as three generations of women seek to prevent the Chernobyl disaster. I am very excited to read this one.
Finally, with the recent release of season two of Bridgerton, I am finally starting the book series on which the Netflix series is based. I’ll be enjoying the first three books in audiobook format. I realize I’m a little late to the party on this one. But better late than never, certainly.

365 Days of Gutsy Women reveals hidden stories of fearless females from the beginning of time. Traditionally women were kept out of history books or simply forgotten in our patriarchal culture. This book provides a daily glimpse into the lives of courageous women who have gone before us. You will discover their stories, one for each day of the year. On Wednesday, you may learn about Mary Anning, a British fossil collector who discovered dinosaurs. On Friday, read about Queen Nanny of the Maroons, an 18th century African who successfully freed more than 1000 slaves on the island of Jamaica. Sunday you may read about the Hindu Goddess Parvati, known as “Mother Goddess” representing a universal source of energy and power. Throughout the book, you’ll read of artists, musicians, educators, philosophers, rebels, authors, poets and innovators who fought gender, racial and religious bias.

Three brilliant women. Two life-changing mistakes. One chance to reset the future.
In 1986, renowned nuclear scientist, Anna Berkova, is sleeping in her bed in the Soviet Union when Chernobyl’s reactor melts down. It’s the exact moment she tears through time—and it’s an accident. When she opens her eyes, she’s landed in 1992 only to discover Molly, her estranged daughter, shot in the chest. Molly, with her dying breath, begs Anna to go back in time and stop the disaster, to save Molly’s daughter Raisa, and put their family’s future on a better path.

In ‘60s Philadelphia, Molly is coming of age as an adopted refusenik. Her family is full of secrets and a past they won’t share. She finds solace in comic books, drawing her own series, Atomic Anna, and she’s determined to make it as an artist. When she meets the volatile, charismatic Viktor, their romance sets her life on a very different course.
In the ‘80s, Raisa, is a lonely teen and math prodigy, until a quiet, handsome boy moves in across the street and an odd old woman shows up claiming to be her biological grandmother. As Raisa finds new issues of Atomic Anna in unexpected places, she notices each comic challenges her to solve equations leading to one impossible conclusion: time travel. And she finally understands what she has to do.
As these remarkable women work together to prevent the greatest nuclear disaster of the 20th century, they grapple with the power their discoveries hold. Just because you can change the past, does it mean you should?
In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound. From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood. A proper duke should be imperious and aloof. A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable.
Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter. The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London. Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit. But no one truly desires her. She is simply too deuced honestfor that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen.
Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings. Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood. Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option. If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him. Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar.
The plan works like a charm—at first. But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule…

This time the gossip columnists have it wrong. London’s most elusive bachelor Anthony Bridgerton hasn’t just decided to marry—he’s even chosen a wife! The only obstacle is his intended’s older sister, Kate Sheffield—the most meddlesome woman ever to grace a London ballroom. The spirited schemer is driving Anthony mad with her determination to stop the betrothal, but when he closes his eyes at night, Kate’s the woman haunting his increasingly erotic dreams…
Contrary to popular belief, Kate is quite sure that reformed rakes do not make the best husbands—and Anthony Bridgerton is the most wicked rogue of them all. Kate’s determined to protect her sister—but she fears her own heart is vulnerable. And when Anthony’s lips touch hers, she’s suddenly afraid she might not be able to resist the reprehensible rake herself…
Sophie Beckett never dreamed she’d be able to sneak into Lady Bridgerton’s famed masquerade ball—or that “Prince Charming” would be waiting there for her! Though the daughter of an earl, Sophie has been relegated to the role of servant by her disdainful stepmother. But now, spinning in the strong arms of the debonair and devastatingly handsome Benedict Bridgerton, she feels like royalty. Alas, she knows all enchantments must end when the clock strikes midnight.
Ever since that magical night, a radiant vision in silver has blinded Benedict to the attractions of any other—except, perhaps, this alluring and oddly familiar beauty dressed in housemaid’s garb whom he feels compelled to rescue from a most disagreeable situation. He has sworn to find and wed his mystery miss, but this breathtaking maid makes him weak with wanting her. Yet, if he offers her his heart, will Benedict sacrifice his only chance for a fairy-tale love?

One of my writing goals for 2022 is to create more short stories. They’re a good creative exercise and sometimes lead to bigger ideas for novels. Or who knows, maybe an eventual collection of short stories in the form of a new book.
My selection this month is more personal in tone than my previous offerings. Less of a story and more a reflection, really. With Passover beginning at the end of the week, like many of you, I find myself meditating on the themes of the holiday, in spiritual preparation, as I have been working through the process of kashering my home. I hope you’ll take a few minutes to share your own reflections in the comments. And of course, chag sameach to you all.
The Kashering
As we prepare for the Passover festival, many of us are looking forward to gathering with friends and loved ones for our first in-person seder in two years. We’re moving into a new phase in the Covid-19 pandemic and experiencing a new normal. I started my preparations in my home last week and it has me reflecting: this year’s kashering feels different.
Kashering is the process of making utensils, dishes, cutting boards and other kitchen instruments kosher.
Two years ago, like many across the country, my company instructed us to pack our equipment and begin working from home. It was supposed to be temporary. We’d all be back in a couple of weeks. As the time dragged on, and the period of isolation continued, I went from wearing business casual to t-shirts and yoga pants, slippers and making endless trips to the kitchen, instead of a cafeteria, for another cup of coffee.

Two years later, my blood type is now caramel macchiato and I have as many pairs of slippers as I do shoes at this point. But as I began my annual purge, something in me felt the need to begin in my closet. Among the first things to go in the charity box were the t-shirts that were once my workday uniform. As a member of the legions who now permanently work from home, I ditched the yoga pants and t-shirts in favor of returning to a more traditional business casual wardrobe. The yoga pants get to stay but now they’re for actually doing yoga.
Another major change to come out of the pandemic is where I live, making my preparations a bigger job than they used to be. I was one of the lucky ones to find a new home as the world started to open up. Given the current housing market, this felt something like winning the lottery. My new space came with an incredible gourmet kitchen with tons of cabinet space. Which means finally having the room to not only go fully kosher but having enough room leftover for a set of Passover kitchen essentials. No more disposable plates or plastic flatware this year! I know, look at me, all #jewishadulting and shit. There’s always been a piece of me that felt I was falling just a little bit short in my observance in years past. I am enjoying moving into this season free from the feeling on inadequacy that as plagued me in the past (pun intended).
Finally, this past Shabbat, my rabbi gave a sermon reflecting on principles of liberal Judaism and the choices we make in our observances. He emphasized the importance of in-depth, reflective study as a way of seeking meaning in the mitzvot. He concluded by sharing his own Mah Nishtanah (four questions) that act as guiding principles in observing the mitzvot. This has had me thinking and I intend to spend some time, over the holiday, drafting my own four questions to serve as my own roadmap as I move forward in my own “new normal”.
It seems only appropriate at this time to recite the Shehecheyanu. I hope you’ll join in:
The sermon I reference in my piece was delivered by Rabbi Edward Boraz, PhD, this past Friday evening, April 8th, at Springhill Avenue Temple, Mobile, Alabama. Rabbi Boraz is an exceptional teacher and Talmudic scholar. He is the author of Understanding the Talmud: A Modern Reader’s Guide for Study.

Straus’s memoir opens in 1953 when, at the age of 10, his parents decide to take him out of public school and transfer him to Yeshiva, along with his younger brother. After enduring Anti-Semitism in public school, his community, and the Boy Scouts, Straus finds himself in a caring and nurturing environment where students fight with words rather than fisticuffs. While still faced with abuse at home from an unstable mother, Straus’s life turns an important corner onto a better path.
Straus is a gifted storyteller, presenting a very honest look at a two-year period that would shape the rest of his life. While many of the themes in this book are very serious, Straus manages to inject humor into his writing, creating a lightness that is needed at times.
While writing from a uniquely Jewish perspective, his story carries a universally relatable thread that applies to many immigrant stories that will appeal to any reader. This is definitely one not to be missed.
I’d like to thank Stuart Schnee for the free copy of the book in exchange for my honest review.

Dr. Arnow’s new release explores various sources of Jewish text and tradition that provide the primary sources for seeking hope in an ever changing world. The book considers nine sources including: Tikkun Olam (repairing the world), the Exodus, HaOlam HaBa (the World to Come), Israel, and Jewish Humor, among others.
Dr. Arnow provides fascinating and thoughtful insight as he offers a new interpretation of Jewish tradition. This work is certainly very timely given the state of the world as we seek a new normal through the pandemic and the attack on Ukraine’s sovereignty. Dr. Arnow’s book provides an excellent meditation for bringing hope into one’s life on an individualized level as well.
This is an excellent book I can see myself returning to regularly.

Monthly Short Story Feature One of my writing goals for 2022 is to create more short stories. They’re a good creative exercise and sometimes lead to bigger ideas for novels. Or who knows, maybe an eventual collection of short stories in the form of a new book. The story I’ve selected for this month is…
In honor of Women’s History Month, I’ve compiled a list of books celebrating Jewish Women. As I was working on this list, I tried to pull from a variety of experiences. While this is by no means a comprehensive list, I hope I’ve managed to represent a number of view points across different time periods.…

I am really looking forward to my reading list this week. I am two books away from completing my reading goal for 2022. Which is wild!
The first book on my list is a crime thriller, set in 1949 Tel Aviv. The protagonist is a private detective and survivor of the Shoah. This one sounds like a page turner. The second book on my list is certainly timely, Tears Over Russia. This new release from Lisa Brahin explores a nearly lost piece of Jewish history as pogroms across Ukraine, from 1917 to 1920 resulted in the murder of somewhere between 100,000 to 250,000 Jews. Brahin’s grandmother was among a group who journeyed for three years in order to escape the violence.
I learned about my third selection from another member of my Torah study group. We are currently working through the very sensual
Song of Songs which is attributed to King Solomon when someone brought up the book Song of Solomon. While the theme of one book doesn’t appear to relate to the other, I’m looking forward to reading this book.
And finally, as Pesach is fast approaching, I am preparing for this season of freedom by reading The Women’s Passover Companion. This book explores the themes of Passover and their impact on women’s lives.

Hired to find a missing boy, Adam thinks the case is hopeless. But he can’t turn down a mother searching for her only child.
What Adam doesn’t realize is that this case will soon put him in mortal danger. For at the root of the mystery lies a double murder that has stayed unsolved for ten long years.
Adam must untangle a web of lies and betrayal to get to the truth. And he’d better watch his back because some of the suspects are willing to kill to keep their dark secrets buried.

A sweeping saga of a Jewish family and community fighting for survival against the ravages of history.
Set between events depicted in Fiddler on the Roof and Schindler’s List, Lisa Brahin’s Tears over Russia brings to life a piece of Jewish history that has never before been told.
Between 1917 and 1921, twenty years before the Holocaust began, an estimated 100,000 to 250,000 Jews were murdered in anti-Jewish pogroms across Ukraine. Lisa grew up transfixed by her grandmother Channa’s stories about her family being forced to flee their hometown of Stavishche, as armies and bandit groups raided village after village, killing Jewish residents. Channa described a perilous three-year journey through Russia and Romania, led at first by a gallant American who had snuck into Ukraine to save his immediate family and ended up leading an exodus of nearly eighty to safety.

With almost no published sources to validate her grandmother’s tales, Lisa embarked on her incredible journey to tell Channa’s story, forging connections with archivists around the world to find elusive documents to fill in the gaps of what happened in Stavishche. She also tapped into connections closer to home, gathering testimonies from her grandmother’s relatives, childhood friends and neighbors.
The result is a moving historical family narrative that speaks to universal human themes—the resilience and hope of ordinary people surviving the ravages of history and human cruelty. With the growing passage of time, it is unlikely that we will see another family saga emerge so richly detailing this forgotten time period. Tears Over Russia eloquently proves that true life is sometimes more compelling than fiction.
Milkman Dead was born shortly after a neighborhood eccentric hurled himself off a rooftop in a vain attempt at flight. For the rest of his life he, too, will be trying to fly. As Morrison follows Milkman from his rustbelt city to the place of his family’s origins, she introduces an entire cast of strivers and seeresses, liars and assassins, the inhabitants of a fully realized Black world.

The Women’s Passover Companion offers an in-depth examination of women’s relationships to Passover as well as the roots and meanings of women’s seders. This groundbreaking collection captures the voices of Jewish women―rabbis, scholars, activists, political leaders and artists―who engage in a provocative conversation about the themes of the Exodus and exile, oppression and liberation, history and memory, as they relate to contemporary women’s lives.
Whether seeking new insights into the text and traditions of Passover or learning about women’s seders for the first time, both women and men will find this collection an inspiring introduction to the Passover season and an eye-opening exploration of questions central to Jewish women, to Passover and to Judaism itself.
