Belle and Isaac face many challenges, both interpersonal and socioeconomic, as they begin a new life, in a new country while fighting to maintain ties to their homeland and the family members left behind. As their story unfolds, painted by the external challenges of the Great Depression, the Second World War, and eventually, the Civil Rights Movement, Silman engages the reader with classic, vivid language. I was engrossed from beginning to end. Silman’s writing grabs the reader from the first and doesn’t let go. I finished reading, wanting more of these characters, in the best possible way.

Lavane’s story is very relatable, even for those dating outside the Orthodox community. Her experiences are at times funny and at times heartbreaking. Lavane gives a very honest take on the challenges women face in a culture that strongly values the family unit. Her take on the very real pressures and frustrations that come with the perceived ‘race to the chuppah’ is refreshing.

Lavane’s willingness to be vulnerable in sharing her own experiences sheds light on the need for greater sensitivity surrounding this important life event. As well as providing inspiration and hope to those with similar experiences.

Levison has created a real page turner with this novel. The story is gripping from the first line. Brendan Cortland is a relatable character and easy to empathize with. His daily struggle is one a lot of readers will identify with. The book really hooks the reader when we finally learn the truth Brendan has kept hidden since his boyhood.

For the reader who has also struggled with trauma, I found this story to offer a sense of hope. Levison does a wonderful job of bringing out an inner strength in her protagonist that is wonderfully inspiring.

For as long as I can remember I’ve dreamed of being an author, the same way some little kids dream of being ballerinas or Major Leaguers. Well, I don’t pirouette, and I sure can’t hit a ball, but from time to time I do come up with a pretty good metaphor.

I’m pretty sure my love of storytelling began one summer night years ago, as I sat by a camp bonfire and listened to a counselor tell a ghost story, The Monkey’s Paw, which made my heart pound and my imagination run wild. The memory still makes me shiver.

Now, I’m thrilled to share my first book with the world. It’s a true crime with echoes of the Holocaust, called THE CRATE: A Story of War, a Murder and Justice.

Birnbach describes the emotional journey of Jewish mourning ritual in her memoir and how this observance brought to her a deeper connection to her faith. Her experience was not without its challenges.

I found Birnbach’s story relatable in the experience of gradually adding various traditions and observances to her daily life as she grew in her faith. I also appreciated her description of her feelings as she moved through the period of mourning and seeing them evolve with the passage of time.

The book, overall, is beautifully written. I had a hard time putting it down. Birnbach does a remarkable job of creating a relationship with the reader that brings out an emotional investment in her story.
