Jewish Soul Food: Traditional Fare and What it Means by Carol Ungar

Click the image to find it on Amazon

Jewish traditional foods often have symbolic meanings. A Passover matzo is a taste of Egyptian slavery. The Hanukkah latke reminds us of the little jug of oil that burned, miraculously, for eight nights. Noshing hamentaschen at Purim, we remember the villain Haman, and his thwarted plan to destroy the Jews. Even more than in the synagogue, Jewish life takes place around the dining table. Jewish sages compare the dining table to an altar, and that isn’t an exaggeration. Jewish meals are ceremonies and celebrations that forge a pathway between body and soul. In this unique cookbook, Carol Ungar links the cultural and religious symbolism of Jewish foods to more than one hundred recipes drawn from international Jewish cultures and traditions. She offers easy-to-follow recipes for Shabbat meals and all the Jewish holidays, from Rosh Hashana to the nine days before Tisha b’Av, along with fascinating briefs on how many Jewish foods―challah, kreplach, farfel, and more―express core Jewish beliefs. With ingredients that can be found in any supermarket, and recipes adapted for the time- and health-conscious cook, this volume is for anyone who wishes to flavor Shabbat and holiday meals with Jewish soul.

The Connections Paradigm: Ancient Jewish Wisdom for Modern Mental Health by Dr. David H Rosmarin

Click the image to find it on Amazon

This book introduces an approach to mental health that dates back 3,000 years to an ancient body of Jewish spiritual wisdom. Known as the Connections Paradigm, the millennia-old method has been empirically shown to alleviate symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression. After being passed down from generation to generation and tested in clinical settings with private clients, it is presented here for the first time to a wide audience.
The idea behind the paradigm is that human beings, at any given moment, are either “connected” or “disconnected” across three key relationships. To be “connected” means to be in a loving, harmonious, and fulfilling relationship; to be “disconnected” means, of course, the opposite. The three relationships are those between our souls and our bodies, ourselves and others, and ourselves and God.

These relationships are hierarchal; each depends on the one that precedes it. This means that we can only connect with God to the extent that we connect with others, and we cannot connect with others if we don’t connect with ourselves. The author, Dr. David H. Rosmarin, devotes a section to each relationship, and describes techniques and practices to become a more connected individual. He also brings in compelling stories from his clinical practice to show the process in action.
Whether you’re a clinician working with clients, or a person seeking the healing balm of wisdom; whether you’re a member of the Jewish faith, or a person open to new spiritual perspectives, you will find this book sensible, practical, and timely, because, for all of us, connection leads to mental health.

This book is for mental health professionals, clergy, and researchers interested in the relationship between religion, spirituality and health in Judaism. A concise description of Jewish beliefs and practices is followed by a systematic review of the research literature, and then by recommendations for clinical practice based on the research findings. The author is a physician researcher who has spent over 30 years investigating the relationship between religion and health, and directs Duke University’s Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health. He is also a clinician who for decades has treated clients with a wide range of emotional disorders using a faith-based approach. The Burning Bush: Writings on Jews and Judaism by Vladimir Solovyov

Click the image to find it on Amazon

Vladimir Solovyov, one of nineteenth-century Russia’s greatest Christian philosophers, was renowned as the leading defender of Jewish civil rights in tsarist Russia in the 1880s. The Burning Bush: Writings on Jews and Judaism presents an annotated translation of Solovyov’s complete oeuvre on the Jewish question, elucidating his terminology and identifying his references to persons, places, and texts, especially from biblical and rabbinic writings. Many texts are provided in English translation by Gregory Yuri Glazov for the first time, including Solovyov’s obituary for Joseph Rabinovitch, a pioneer of modern Messianic Judaism, and his letter in the London Times of 1890 advocating for greater Jewish civil rights in Russia, printed alongside a similar petition by Cardinal Manning. Glazov’s introduction presents a summary of Solovyov’s life, explains how the texts in this collection were chosen, and provides a survey of Russian Jewish history to help the reader understand the context and evaluate the significance of Solovyov’s work. In his extensive commentary in Part II, which draws on key memoirs from family and friends, Glazov paints a rich portrait of Solovyov’s encounters with Jews and Judaism and of the religious-philosophical ideas that he both brought to and derived from those encounters. The Burning Bush explains why Jews posthumously accorded Solovyov the accolade of a “righteous gentile,” and why his ecumenical hopes and struggles to reconcile Judaism and Christianity and persuade secular authorities to respect conscience and religious freedom still bear prophetic vitality.

Healing and the Jewish Imagination: Spiritual and Practical Perspectives on Judaism and Health by Rabbi William Cutter PhD

Click the image to find it on Amazon

Where Judaism and health intersect, healing may begin.

Essential reading for people interested in the Jewish healing, spirituality and spiritual direction movements, this groundbreaking volume explores the Jewish tradition for comfort in times of illness and Judaism’s perspectives on the inevitable suffering with which we live.

Pushing the boundaries of Jewish knowledge, scholars, teachers, artists and activists examine the aspects of our mortality and the important distinctions between curing and healing. Topics discussed include:

  • The Importance of the Individual
  • Health and Healing among the Mystics
  • Hope and the Hebrew Bible
  • From Disability to Enablement
  • Overcoming Stigma
  • Jewish Bioethics

Drawing from literature, personal experience and the foundational texts of Judaism, these celebrated thinkers show us that healing is an idea that can both soften us so that we are open to inspiration as well as toughen us―like good scar tissue―in order to live with the consequences of being human.

The Hadassah Jewish Family Book of Health and Wellness by Dr. Robin E. Berman

The Jewish people have special concerns, approaches, and attitudes about health and wellness, due in part to certain illnesses known as “Jewish genetic diseases,” such as Tay-Sachs, Niemann-Pick, Gaucher, and others. Beyond these genetic diseases, however, the entire range of topics and issues related to health and wellness has long been of great interest to the religious and secular Jewish community. Jewish tradition has developed many special approaches to health and health-related issues, based on the hallowed traditions and precepts found in the Torah, its commentaries, and the vast literature written by rabbinic authorities throughout the centuries. Similarly Jewish secular culture has developed many special attitudes and approaches to the issues in this book regarding women’s health, nutrition, raising children, caregiving, and other special issues.

The Hadassah Jewish Family Book of Health and Wellness, written in collaboration with Hadassah: The Women’s Zionist Organization of America, known throughout the world for its leadership as a major force in health research and education, provides a much-needed resource and guide to physical health and spiritual issues that are of concern to Jewish families.

The Sabbath by Abraham Joshua Heschel

In this brief yet profound meditation on the meaning of the Seventh Day, Heschel introduced the idea of an “architecture of holiness” that appears not in space but in time Judaism, he argues, is a religion of time: it finds meaning not in space and the material things that fill it but in time and the eternity that imbues it, so that “the Sabbaths are our great cathedrals.”

The Lonely Man of Faith by Joseph B. Soloveitchik

oseph B. Soloveitchik, the rabbi known as “The Rav” by his followers worldwide, was a leading authority on the meaning of Jewish law and prominent force in building bridges between traditional Orthodox Judaism and the modern world. In The Lonely Man of Faith, a soaring, eloquent essay first published in Tradition magazine in 1965, Soloveitchik investigates the essential loneliness of the person of faith in our narcissistic, materially oriented, utilitarian society.

lick the image to find it on Amazon

In this modern classic, Soloveitchik uses the story of Adam and Eve as a springboard, interweaving insights from such important Western philosophers as Kierkegaard and Kant with innovative readings of Genesis to provide guidance for the faithful in today’s world. He explains prayer as “the harbinger of moral reformation,” and discusses with empathy and understanding the despair and exasperation of individuals who seek personal redemption through direct knowledge of a God who seems remote and unapproachable. He shows that while the faithful may become members of a religious community, their true home is “the abode of loneliness.” In a moving personal testimony, Soloveitchik demonstrates a deep-seated commitment, intellectual courage, and integrity to which people of all religions will respond.

My Evil Mother: A Short Story by Margaret Atwood
Click the image to find it on Amazon

Life is hard enough for a teenage girl in 1950s suburbia without having a mother who may—or may not—be a witch. A single mother at that. Sure, she fits in with her starched dresses, string of pearls, and floral aprons. Then there are the hushed and mystical consultations with neighborhood women in distress. The unsavory, mysterious plants in the flower beds. The divined warning to steer clear of a boyfriend whose fate is certainly doomed. But as the daughter of this bewitching homemaker comes of age and her mother’s claims become more and more outlandish, she begins to question everything she once took for granted.

Reminders of Him by Colleen Hoover

After serving five years in prison for a tragic mistake, Kenna Rowan returns to the town where it all went wrong, hoping to reunite with her four-year-old daughter. But the bridges Kenna burned are proving impossible to rebuild. Everyone in her daughter’s life is determined to shut Kenna out, no matter how hard she works to prove herself.

The only person who hasn’t closed the door on her completely is Ledger Ward, a local bar owner and one of the few remaining links to Kenna’s daughter. But if anyone were to discover how Ledger is slowly becoming an important part of Kenna’s life, both would risk losing the trust of everyone important to them.

The two form a connection despite the pressure surrounding them, but as their romance grows, so does the risk. Kenna must find a way to absolve the mistakes of her past in order to build a future out of hope and healing.

[Book Review] A New Memoir by Sarah Birnbach

A Daughter's Kaddish by Sarah Birnbach
Click the image to find it on Amazon
By Sarah Birnbach

The Mourner’s Kaddish is a traditional Jewish prayer, written in Aramaic. At the loss of a parent, child, or spouse, it is traditional to recite the prayer for eleven months. After the loss of her father, Sarah Birnbach commits to reciting the Kaddish, twice daily, in synagogue, for eleven months.

A Daughter's Kaddish by Sarah Birnbach

Birnbach describes the emotional journey of Jewish mourning ritual in her memoir and how this observance brought to her a deeper connection to her faith. Her experience was not without its challenges.

I found Birnbach’s story relatable in the experience of gradually adding various traditions and observances to her daily life as she grew in her faith. I also appreciated her description of her feelings as she moved through the period of mourning and seeing them evolve with the passage of time.

The book, overall, is beautifully written. I had a hard time putting it down. Birnbach does a remarkable job of creating a relationship with the reader that brings out an emotional investment in her story.

A Daughter’s Kaddish is currently available for pre-order and scheduled for release on September 27th.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

The Mourner’s Kaddish

Glorified and sanctified be God’s great name throughout the world
which He has created according to His will.

May He establish His kingdom in your lifetime and during your days,
and within the life of the entire House of Israel, speedily and soon;
and say, Amen.

May His great name be blessed forever and to all eternity.

Blessed and praised, glorified and exalted, extolled and honored,
adored and lauded be the name of the Holy One, blessed be He,
beyond all the blessings and hymns, praises and consolations that
are ever spoken in the world; and say, Amen.

May there be abundant peace from heaven, and life, for us
and for all Israel; and say, Amen.

He who creates peace in His celestial heights,
may He create peace for us and for all Israel;
and say, Amen.

New Books for Your Reading List – August 2, 2022

Read Along with Me

new books for your reading list

I am very much looking forward to the new books on my list this week.

The first book on my list is one I picked up from the gift shop on a visit to the Museum of the Southern Jewish Experience, in New Orleans. The museum is dedicated to sharing the unique experience of Jewry in the American South. The book I selected is Matzah Ball Gumbo, which explores the fusion of traditional Jewish dishes with a southern flare.

Next on my list is Drinking: A Love Story. This book was recommended by a friend. Having spent 10 years in the Wisconsin bar business, I’ve seen the effects of addiction and it’s impact on so many lives. I’m looking forward to digging into this one.

And finally, I’ll be finishing the two book series I started last week with Namesake. What can I say, I’m hooked!

Drinking: A Love Story by Caroline Knapp

Fifteen million Americans a year are plagued with alcoholism. Five million of them are women. Many of them, like Caroline Knapp, started in their early teens and began to use alcohol as “liquid armor,” a way to protect themselves against the difficult realities of life. In this extraordinarily candid and revealing memoir, Knapp offers important insights not only about alcoholism, but about life itself and how we learn to cope with it.

It was love at first sight. The beads of moisture on a chilled bottle. The way the glasses clinked and the conversation flowed. Then it became obsession. The way she hid her bottles behind her lover’s refrigerator. The way she slipped from the dinner table to the bathroom, from work to the bar. And then, like so many love stories, it fell apart. Drinking is Caroline Kapp’s harrowing chronicle of her twenty-year love affair with alcohol.

Click the image to find it on Amazon

Caroline had her first drink at fourteen. She drank through her yeras at an Ivy League college, and through an award-winning career as an editor and columnist. Publicly she was a dutiful daughter, a sophisticated professional. Privately she was drinking herself into oblivion. This startlingly honest memoir lays bare the secrecy, family myths, and destructive relationships that go hand in hand with drinking. And it is, above all, a love story for our times—full of passion and heartbreak, betrayal and desire—a triumph over the pain and deception that mark an alcoholic life.

[Book Review] The Anticipated New Release from Sherry V. Ostroff

Expulsion Sherry V. Ostroff Spanish Inquisition Jewish literature
Click the image to find it on Amazon
By Sherry V. Ostroff

The much anticipated new release from Sherry V. Ostroff is here! And it is everything I hoped it would be.

Expulsion Sherry V. Ostroff Spanish Inquisition Jewish literature

Ostroff sets her newest historical fiction work at a perilous time in Jewish history, the Spanish Inquisition. Like her previous works, this story is impeccably well-researched. Ostroff subtly historical details, adding intricacies to the writing, painting a vivid picture of the time period.

True to Ostroff’s past historical heroines, Basseva is a strong-willed, forward thinking young woman who was raised in an influential family. As a result, she enjoyed freedoms other members of the Jewish community did not in the kingdom of Ferdinand and Isabella. But as pressures increase in the Christian court, Basseva is faced with difficult choices.

Ostroff does a wonderful job of exploring the difficulties of maintaining religious belief and ritual practice at an incredibly dangerous time in Jewish history. You’re not going to want to miss this story.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Editorial Reviews: A 5 star winner from Reader’s Favorite. “While you read this book, you will experience many emotions as you watch

[Book Review] The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

Click the image to find it on Amazon
By Jodi Picoult

I first discovered Jodi Picoult through her more recent release, The Book of Two Ways. Since then, I’ve picked up Wish You Were Here and today, I’m reviewing The Storyteller. Needless to say, I’m becoming a big fan.

The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult

The Storyteller is a duel timeline novel, exploring grief and generational trauma. Picoult also explores unlikely friendships along with deeply held secrets in this captivating story.

The central protagonist, Sage, is coping with the guilt and trauma surrounding the loss of her mother. While of Jewish decent, she does not consider herself Jewish. However, her grandmother is a survivor of the Holocaust. Sage discovers a deeper understanding of her grandmother’s past through an unlikely friendship with an elderly man from her grief group and his revelation of a disturbing secret.

Adding additional depth to the story is the inclusion of Sage’s grandmother’s writings in a journal from when she was a teenage, living in a Jewish ghetto in Poland. Her writings were inspired by Polish folklore. The story she crafts, as a young girl, surround by unimaginable terror and suffering, provides interesting insights into her experiences and feelings from the time.

Picoult masterfully crafts an engrossing story from beginning to end. I couldn’t put it down.

Amazing Books for Your Reading List – July 26, 2022

Read Along with Me

book list: A Daughter's Kaddish, The Secret Diaries of Anne Lister, and Fable

I am very much looking forward to the books on my list this week. There are some great books on it this week.

The first book on my list is an advanced copy of Sarah Birmbach’s upcoming memoir, A Daughter’s Kaddish. Scheduled for release in September, Birmbach explores her own experience with the Jewish traditions of mourning.

Next on my list is the second volume of Anne Lister’s diaries. I enjoy the series adaptation of her life and am looking forward to reading the second volume of her writings.

And finally, the third book on my list is one I discovered through the Bookstagram community. I’ve been seeing Fable in everyone’s feed. While I’m generally not a fan of YA literature, I’m looking forward to checking this one out.

In A Daughter’s Kaddish, Sarah Birnbach recounts her year-long odyssey through bereavement to persevere through an unfamiliar world of Jewish prayer and chart a course without a road map. A novice worshipper and single working mother, Sarah encountered many obstacles—including vehement gender-based objections to her recitation of the Mourner’s Kaddish, her own daughter’s near-fatal car accident, an incident that tore her synagogue apart, and her mother’s hostility and dismissiveness.

To honor her beloved father in the year following his death, Sarah commits to saying Kaddish twice a day in synagogue for eleven months, as is stipulated by her religion. Sarah attempts to incorporate these new religious and spiritual practices into her already hectic twenty-first-century life while struggling with the heavy emotional distress of grief. As she travels the country for work, Sarah must find a synagogue where she can pray in each city and town she visits, a challenge that brings many surprises—and upsets. Throughout her year of devotion, Sarah takes comfort in the loving memories of her childhood while at the same time grappling with some very painful ones—ultimately discovering how the path of faith and grief can lead to true healing.

The Secret Diaries of Miss Anne Lister Vol II by Anne Lister

When Helena Whitbread first published excerpts from Anne Lister’s diary, which was written in a complicated, esoteric code, it was hailed as a lost piece of lesbian history. Whitbread has devoted years to researching and transcribing Lister’s extensive journals; the ‘crypthand’ had allowed Lister to record her life in intimate, and at times, explicit, detail. It was the first time her story had been told.

This second volume continues the story of one of the most remarkable women of her time: landowner, industrialist, traveller and lesbian. Anne Lister arrives in post-revolutionary Paris in 1824, attempting to recover from a doomed love affair with a married woman. There she becomes emotionally entangled with a young widow. Anne’s efforts, firstly to extricate herself from this new ‘scrape’ and then to make a choice between the two women in her life, provides an absorbing sexual and social drama.

We follow Anne Lister to Buxton, Derbyshire, where a husband appears in hot pursuit of his straying wife who has, in turn, followed Anne there; in Halifax, the Yorkshire town of Anne’s birth; to London; and to post-revolutionary Paris, a city alive with political intrigue. Anne’s descriptive powers bring each scene vividly to life, providing a brilliant, kaleidoscopic background to her story.

Filled with all of the action, emotion, and lyrical writing that brought readers to Sky in the Deep, New York Times bestselling author Adrienne Young returns with Fable, the first book in this new captivating duology.

Welcome to a world made dangerous by the sea and by those who wish to profit from it. Where a young girl must find her place and her family while trying to survive in a world built for men.

As the daughter of the most powerful trader in the Narrows, the sea is the only home seventeen-year-old Fable has ever known. It’s been four years since the night she watched her mother drown during an unforgiving storm. The next day her father abandoned her on a legendary island filled with thieves and little food. To survive she must keep to herself, learn to trust no one and rely on the unique skills her mother taught her. The only thing that keeps her going is the goal of getting off the island, finding her father and demanding her rightful place beside him and his crew. To do so Fable enlists the help of a young trader named West to get her off the island and across the Narrows to her father.

But her father’s rivalries and the dangers of his trading enterprise have only multiplied since she last saw him and Fable soon finds that West isn’t who he seems. Together, they will have to survive more than the treacherous storms that haunt the Narrows if they’re going to stay alive.
