[Book Review] URGE to ROME: My Quest to Become Sexy, Sultry & Migraine-Free by Kyra Robinov

By Kyra Robinov

When her husband’s work in food opens up the opportunity for their family to spend a year living abroad, they make the decision to spend a year in Rome. Kyra Robinov’s latest memoir recounts their year of new experiences, challenges, and personal growth as she and her husband, along with their two teenaged children, navigate life in a new culture.

Robinov brings a conversational style of writing to her latest work that feels like listening to a friend telling a story over afternoon tea. The experiences are very relatable with all of the ups and downs for each member of the family. Her descriptions of the cultural differences and trying to navigate language barriers were interesting, interjecting some humor in parts. The book is perfectly paced with a great balance between storytelling and personal reflection.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and recommend it to anyone considering a journey to gain perspective.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

More About the Author

Kyra Robinov is a Manhattan-based writer who works in many genres—fiction, non-fiction, musical theatre, and children’s literature. She draws much of her inspiration from the incredible stories she heard growing up about her family’s remarkable experiences.

After fictionalizing her paternal grandmother’s story of a young mother surviving the Russian Revolution in her historical novel, RED WINTER, Kyra decided to focus on her father’s life. Her new nonfiction release, HiSTORY, spotlights a daughter’s perspective on a bygone era and a man who struggled before ultimately achieving financial and personal success.

Kyra Robinov’s passion for the arts and storytelling originated in ballet and drama, and often, but not always, relates to her Russian Jewish heritage. She has worked on multiple live theater pieces.  Kyra wrote the book and lyrics for TO DANCE, a musical inspired by the true life of Russian Jewish ballet dancer Valery Panov, which was featured at the NYC Fringe Festival in 2015.

Her whimsical NATURE SERIES IN VERSE—MATT McFLACK & HIS FLYAWAY KITE, DANCE OF THE SEASONS, and THE FOLLY OF POLLY THE PENGUIN—introduces young readers to the importance of perseverance, the different times of the year, and combatting climate change. The books are also available on Audible.com.

Kyra’s latest release is URGE to ROME: My Quest to Become Sexy, Sultry & Migraine-free, a personal recollection about the challenging year she and her family spent while following their dream to live abroad.

Books On My Reading List This Week

Read Along With Me

This week, I’m continuing my focus on Jewish literature. I’m still working my way through Elie Wiesel’s Night Trilogy. I should be finishing Dawn this week and moving on to Day.

The second book on my list is from my Want to Read list on Goodreads. I add recommendations, titles I learn about through my Facebook groups and Bookstagram community, and suggestions from friends. But then I find other titles and the books on my Want to Read list never seem to make it to the Currently Reading list. My Want to Read list is currently at 83 titles. And that needs to change! So this week, I’m determined to cross the first book off the list, so I’m starting with The Girl with the Silver Star by Rachel Zolotov.

How many books are on your Want to Read list? I hope you’ll add your suggestions in the comments.

Elie Wiesel writes of their battle for survival and of his battle with God for a way to understand the wanton cruelty he witnesses each day.

As a hailstorm of bombs begins to shatter the city of Minsk in Belarus, Raisa and her family run through the darkness of night to take cover. When Raisa, Abraham, and their daughters, Luba and Sofia, emerge from the bomb shelter, they find an unfamiliar city before them; chaos and terror burn in every direction. Fearing for their lives, they must leave at once to find the rest of their family. But before they are able to escape, Abraham is conscripted into the Russian Army and the family is forced to part ways. Raisa’s love and strength are put to the ultimate test as she finds herself on her own with her two young daughters in tow. How will she manage alone without her soulmate by her side?

Relying on hope, resourcefulness and courage, they walk, hitch hike and take trains heading for Uzbekistan, over 2,500 miles from home. Along the way they run from bombs, endure starvation, and face death.

Raisa finds solace in the women around her. Her mother, sisters, old friends and new help carry her through the difficult war years, but Raisa’s longing to reunite with Abraham still rages inside her heart. Will they ever see each other again? Will Raisa and her family find their way back to their homeland?

The Girl with the Silver Star is a captivating journey through war-torn Soviet Union as it illuminates a unique part of WWII history, the female heroes. Raisa’s journey is a tribute to the nameless women, their determination, bravery, grief and unwavering love during impossible times. Their stories shouldn’t be forgotten.

4. Hanukkah Bear by Eric A. Kimmel

From the Back Cover:

Bubba Brayna’s legendary latkes lure an unexpected visitor into her home in this playful Hanukkah tale from a master storyteller.

Bubba Brayna makes the best latkes in the village, and on the first night of Hanukkah, the scent of her cooking wakes a hungry, adorable bear from his hibernation.  He lumbers into town to investigate, and Bubba Brayna—who does not see or hear very well—mistakes him for her rabbi. She welcomes the bear inside to play the dreidel game, light the menorah, and enjoy a scrumptious meal.

However, after her well-fed guest leaves, there’s a knock at the door—it’s the rabbi, and all of Brayna’s other friends, arriving for dinner.  But there are no latkes left—and together, they finally figure out who really ate them.

Lively illustrations by Mike Wohnoutka, portraying the sprightly Bubba Brayna and her very hungry guest, accompany this instant family favorite, a humorous reworking of Eric A. Kimmel’s earlier classic tale, The Chanukkah Guest. A traditional recipe for latkes is included in the back matter, along with interesting, digestible facts about the history and traditions of Hanukkah.

A 2013 National Jewish Book Award Winner, this book is perfect for a holiday story time with children— either in the classroom or at home, as an introduction for young readers to the traditions and customs of Hanukkah, and as a classic to return to year after year.

5. The Night Before Hanukkah by Natasha Wing

From the Back Cover:

The newest title in the bestselling Night Before series is the perfect gift for every girl and boy who celebrates Hanukkah!

It’s the night before the eight-day celebration of Hanukkah begins, and everyone is excited! Each evening, the family gathers to light the candles and share holiday traditions such as playing dreidel, eating latkes, and exchanging gifts. The seventeenth title in Natasha Wing’s bestselling series, The Night Before Hanukkah captures all the joy and love in one of the most wonderful times of the year!

6. Daddy Christmas, Hanukkah Mama by Selina Alko

From the Back Cover:

A perfect gift for the holiday season, no matter what you celebrate in December!

I am a mix of two traditions.
From Daddy Christmas and Hanukkah Mama.
How lucky am I?

Holiday time at Sadie’s house means golden gelt sparkling under the Christmas tree, candy canes hanging on eight menorah branches, voices uniting to sing carols about Macabees and the manger, and latkes on the mantel awaiting Santa’s arrival.

Selina Alko’s joyous celebration of blended families will make the perfect holiday gift for the many Americans who celebrate both Christmas and Hanukkah.

7. Latke the Lucky Dog by Ellen Fischer

From the Back Cover:

Rescued from an animal shelter on the first night of Hanukkah, Latke has trouble learning the house rules. Despite a series of mishaps, he is one Lucky Dog!

8. Hershel and the Hanukkah Goblins by Eric A. Kimmel

From the Back Cover:

A classic Hanukkah tale, now available in a beautiful anniversary edition.  A Caldecott Honor book.

On the first night of Hanukkah, a weary traveler named Hershel of Ostropol eagerly approaches a village, where plenty of latkes and merriment should warm him.

But when he arrives not a single candle is lit. A band of frightful goblins has taken over the synagogue, and the villagers cannot celebrate at all! Hershel vows to help them. Using his wits, the clever trickster faces down one goblin after the next, night after night.  But can one man alone save Hanukkah and live to tell the tale?

An original adventure featuring a traditional Jewish folk hero, this clever story has been a family favorite for decades and was named a Caldecott Honor book when it was originally published, and received a Sydney Taylor Award Honor.  Trina Schart Hyman’s leering goblins are equal parts terrifying and ridiculous as they match wits with Hershel, trying to keep him from lighting the menorah and celebrating Hanukkah.

This beautiful 25th Anniversary Edition includes an insightful afterword from the author and publisher explaining the book’s origins, and remembering Trina Schart Hyman, the illustrator who brought the tale to life.  This classic picture book is a perfect Hanukkah gift and a wonderful read-aloud.

For more tales of this clever folk hero, read The Adventures of Hershel of Ostropol— another collaboration between master storyteller Eric A. Kimmel and Trina Schart Hyman.

9. Little Red Ruthie: A Hanukkah Tale by Gloria Koster

From the Back Cover:

It was a chilly winter in the northern woods, but Ruthie did not mind. Dressed in her favorite puffy red coat, she was going to spend Hanukkah with her grandmother, who lived on the other side of the forest. Ruthie was bringing sour cream and applesauce to go along with the yummy latkes. She carefully packed her basket and kissed her mother good-bye. Snow began to fall. Soon Ruthie was lost in a thicket, and she was not alone. Someone was hiding behind the tree, and when he jumped out, Ruthie found herself face to face with a wolf. Ruthie will have to convince the wolf that eating latkes will be tastier than eating her!

10. Meet the Latkes by Alan Silberberg

From the Back Cover:

Imagine James Marshall’s The Stupids celebrating Hanukkah, and you’d get the Latke family!

Lucy Latke’s family is just like yours or mine. Except that they’re potato pancakes. And also, they are completely clueless. After lighting the menorah and gobbling the gelt, Grandpa Latke tells everyone the Hanukkah story, complete with mighty Mega Bees who use a giant dreidel to fight against the evil alien potatoes from Planet Chhh. It’s up to the Latke family dog to set the record straight. (To start with, they were Maccabees, not Mega Bees…) But he’ll have to get the rest of the Latkes to listen to him first!

Books On My Reading List This Week

Read Along With Me

This week, I’m continuing my focus on Jewish literature. I’m still working my way through Elie Wiesel’s Night Trilogy. I wish I would have picked this back up sooner. Wiesel’s writing is absolutely brilliant.

The second book on my list is a new release from Kyra Robinov, URGE to ROME: My Quest To Become Sexy, Sultry & Migraine-Free. Robinov recounts her year living in Italy. I’m really looking forward to reading about her journey.

What books are on your list this week? I hope you’ll add your suggestions in the comments.

I could have gone to a shrink. But a year in Italy sounded so much more appealing. My fantasy was that by changing my address, my insecurities would vanish and I would magically become the sexy, sultry, and migraine-free woman I was always meant to be.

After 9/11, the stress of daily life in NYC consumed me and everyone else. Throw in a couple of aging parents, two adolescent children, a workaholic husband, and a defective I-can-and-must-do-everything-perfectly gene, and it’s probably not unexpected that migraines had become a way of life for me. The idea of moving away, combined with visions of a slower, quieter life where we’d have time to “chew” our food, “breathe” the air, and take frequent weekend jaunts, was extremely enticing.

When the stars aligned enough to make our adventure possible, we jumped at the chance. Little did we know what awaited us.

[Book Review] A Contrary Journey with Velvel Zbarzher, Bard by Jill Culiner

Click the image to find it on Amazon
By Jill Culiner

In her latest work, Jill Culiner takes her reader on a journey through 19th century eastern Europe as she searches for a rebel and contrarian, Velvel Zbarzher. Zbarzher spoke in favor of Jewish Enlightenment at a time when communities were ruled by the Hasidic rebbes and Jewish law controlled all aspects of life. Culiner takes her readers on a journey through this world, bringing to light a potentially forgotten piece of Jewish history.

Culiner brings her readers along on her journeys in a way that is absolutely brilliant. Wrapping history and Jewish culture in beautiful prose, bringing back to memory an extraordinary Hebrew poet and Yiddish melodramatist, whose work paved the way to later Yiddish theater. Culiner’s writing style engages the reader from beginning to end while teaching important, and often forgotten, pieces of Jewish history. This one needs to be on your reading list!

I would like to thank the author for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Books On My Reading List This Week

Read Along With Me

This week, I’m focusing on Jewish literature. I hope you’ll read along with me as I visit some contemporary classic Jewish literature and a newly published work by historian and artist, Jill Culiner.

The first work on my list is I and Thou by Martin Buber. Regarded as a classic text, Buber explores existence and the relationship with fellow humans as well as one’s relationship to G-d. This has been on my reading list for a long time and I’m really looking forward to finally getting started with it.

The second is Elie Wiesel’s Night Trilogy. I read the first book, Night, about two and half years ago during a period of study so didn’t have the opportunity to read the other two books. I plan to reread the first book again. I’m curious how my perspective on it will change as compared to

the first time I read it.

The final book on my list is a newly released work by Jill Culiner, The Contrary Journey. This is my second work by Ms Culiner and I am a fan. She does extensive research into the potentially forgotten areas of Jewish history an the Jewish experience, primarily in eastern Europe in the 19th century. And what she presents her research in beautiful prose, transporting her readers into the world of her research. The reader experiences that world. Her writing is so much more than presenting lost histories.

What books are on your list this week? I hope you’ll add your suggestions in the comments.

Jewish Literature

I and Thou
Click the image to find it on Amazon

Martin Buber’s I and Thou has long been acclaimed as a classic. Many prominent writers have acknowledged its influence on their work; students of intellectual history consider it a landmark; and the generation born since World War II considers Buber as one of its prophets. The need for a new English translation has been felt for many years. The old version was marred by many inaccuracies and misunderstandings, and its recurrent use of the archaic “thou” was seriously misleading. Now Professor Walter Kaufmann, a distinguished writer and philosopher in his own right who was close to Buber, has retranslated the work at the request of Buber’s family. He has added a wealth of informative footnotes to clarify obscurities and bring the reader closer to the original, and he has written a long “Prologue” that opens up new perspectives on the book and on Buber’s thought. This volume should provide a new basis for all future discussions of Buber.

The Night Trilogy

Night is one of the masterpieces of Holocaust literature. First published in 1958, it is the autobiographical account of an adolescent boy and his father in Auschwitz. Elie Wiesel writes of their battle for survival and of his battle with God for a way to understand the wanton cruelty he witnesses each day.

In the short novel Dawn (1960), a young man who has survived World War II and settled in Palestine joins a Jewish underground movement and is commanded to execute a British officer who has been taken hostage.

In Day (previously titled The Accident, 1961), Wiesel questions the limits of conscience: Can Holocaust survivors forge a new life despite their memories? Wiesel’s trilogy offers insights on mankind’s attraction to violence and on the temptation of self-destruction.

The Contrary Journey

The Old Country, how did it smell? Sound? Was village life as cosy as popular myth would have us believe? Was there really a strong sense of community? Perhaps it was another place altogether.

In 19thc Eastern Europe, Jewish life was ruled by Hasidic rebbes or the traditional Misnagedim, and religious law dictated every aspect of daily life. Secular books were forbidden; independent thinkers were threatened with moral rebuke, magical retribution and expulsion. But the Maskilim, proponents of the Haskalah or Jewish Enlightenment, were determined to create a modern Jew, to found schools where children could learn science, geography, languages and history.

Velvel Zbarzher, rebel and glittering star of fusty inns, spent his life singing his poems to loyal audiences of poor workers and craftsmen, and his attacks condemning the religious stronghold resulted in banishment and itinerancy. By the time Velvel died in Constantinople in 1883, the Haskalah had triumphed and the modern Jew had been created. But modernisation and assimilation hadn’t brought an end to anti-Semitism.

Armed with a useless nineteenth-century map, a lumpy second-hand coat, and an unhealthy dose of curiosity Jill Culiner trudged through the snow in former Galicia, the Russian Pale, and Romania searching for Velvel. But she was also on the lookout for a vanished way of life in Austria, Turkey and Canada.

This book, chronicling a forgotten part of Jewish history, follows the life of one extraordinary Jewish bard, and it is told with wry humour by award-winning Canadian writer Jill Culiner.

[Book Review] The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner

By Sarah Penner

Nella is an apothecary in 18th century London like her mother before her. But when a lover’s deception brings tragedy to her doorstep, Nella begins dispensing tinctures, powders, and the like to women desperate to be free of men in their lives. Each customer, and her intended victim, is recorded in the apothecary’s ledger and none of her wares are to be used to harm other women. But when a wide-eyed twelve year old, Eliza Fanning, arrives at her door, events that follow put the identities of Nella’s clients at risk.

Move ahead to present day London and Caroline Parcewell is spending her tenth anniversary trip alone after learning of her husband’s infidelity. In her effort to gain perspective on her life, which has left her unsatisfied and unfulfilled, Caroline joins a mud-larking tour along the Themes. There, in the mud, she finds a link to the past that reignites her passion for history and changes the course of her forever.

This is a duel timeline, historical fiction novel and my first by Sarah Penner. It’s beautifully written, with wonderfully descriptive language, placing the reader along side the characters in every scene. Having read a number of duel timeline works, I admittedly struggled to understand the tie between the past and present storylines, early in the book. This really doesn’t become clear until late in the story but wraps up very nicely and I’m glad I stuck with it. I enjoyed the very spirited Eliza Fanning and saw her as the true heroine of the story.

This is an excellent book to add to your autumn reading list, to enjoy with a nice cup of tea.

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Books On My Reading List This Week

Read Along With Me

Over the weekend, I made a trip to my local library, in search of some new reading material. I find it incredibly relaxing to wander among the shelves, browsing the spines until something jumps out at me. On a recent trip, I discovered a biography on Charlotte Bronte, a favorite of mine, and the Lucy Worsley on Jane Austen I’ve been meaning to pick up for ages.

My most recent library excursion had me on the hunt for art books. I find doing art helps me transition from my very technical 9 to 5 to a more creative mindset so I can focus more effectively on writing. It’s also a good way to manage stress, process feelings. The benefits of doing art go on and on.

But getting back to books, I picked up a nice collection of wonderful art books to explore new skills in painting on glass and working with encaustics. I’m also wanting to get started in pastels so I found a couple of books on that as well.

For more focused reading, I added The Complete Works of Virginia Woolf to my reading list. In all my reading of classic literature, I have yet to read anything by Ms Woolf. I’m looking forward to getting to know her work better this week.

What books are on your list this week? I hope you’ll add your suggestions in the comments.

This is the complete body of work of Virginia Woolf, including essays, short stories, novels, writing journals. It’s an impressively lengthy volume. I’m looking forward to working my way through it, a little at a time.

Encaustics

Encaustic art is a medium that involves painting with melted wax. I first discovered it at an art fair, where I had the chance to speak with an artist who specializes in it. With the use of heat, it’s possible to create smooth, blended colors. Brushing melted wax onto a piece creates layers and texture. It’s also possible to embed paper and photographs into the wax, creating mixed media work.

I’ve done a number of pieces in this medium, including vases, coffee mugs, even an old window. It’s always nice to learn new techniques and find new ideas.

Pastels

I bought a set of pastels ages ago and have done nothing with them. I’m looking forward to getting started with them soon!

This is also a new medium to me, one I was introduced to by my dear friend and artist, Maggie Boraz. She works in a variety of mediums and created the cover art for my debut novel, The House on Maple Street. Visit her online gallery at maggieboraz.com.

[Book Review] Under His Spell by Luv Lubker

By Luv Lubker

Book one in The Rival Court series, Under His Spell is a historical romance novel following the love story of Prince Fritz of Prussia and Princess Vicky, eldest daughter of Queen Victoria. The young couple aspires to unite Germany into a peaceful kingdom but Fritz’s uncle Karl has other aspirations.

This story is an incredibly well researched imagining of the early years of Fritz and Vicky’s marriage against the backdrop of the complicatedly interwoven royal houses of Europe. Vicky’s role was certainly far from easy and she is a fascinating heroine. Lubker creates an engaging tale that kept my interest from beginning to end.

I would like to thank the author for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. Under His Spell is available for purchase through the author’s website.

Rating: 5 out of 5.
