Happy 5782 readers! I hope you enjoyed a Happy Rosh Hashanah and an easy, meaningful Yom Kippur fast.
I’ve been on a little hiatus from my blog for the past three months. First, I’d like to thank the many of you who contacted me during this time. I appreciate all of you!
The biggest news to come out of this break is: I have relocated to southern Alabama! I’m originally from Wisconsin and when the opportunity to get away from the harsh winters came along, I took it. It’s been a great transition, so far. I’m enjoying the warmer weather and being in close proximity to the beach. I’ve been embraced by a new synagogue community, which has also been fantastic. And now that I’m finally all settled in, I am excited to get back to normal life, including writing.
New Features on the Blog
I’m making a few adjustments to my usual blogging routine:
Contests have been changed to open submissions centered around a seasonal theme. From the now until the end of October, I will be accepting submissions centered around the theme of Giving Thanks. Selections will be published during the month of November. I am really looking forward to giving a voice to fellow writers and to reading your submissions.
I am going to be cutting back on the number of books I will be accepting per month for review. This is to allow me more time for my personal reading list as well as time to write. I’ll be featuring more reading lists centered around a common theme between reviews.
Authors are welcome to request interviews with me. Please use the form on the Contact Me page. Interviews will continue to run on Tuesdays.

Rose Ross was the first child born in the Neustadt, Germany displaced persons camp (1946). “Growing up in the Bronx, the only child of Holocaust survivors, affected me deeply, filling up my mind and the very air I breathed, ” says Ross. “Their story, and the stories of other survivors, and the second generation of the children I grew up with were the motivation for Lila – my first novel at age 73!”
Ross, a former actress, was a Board Member of Stageworks/Hudson and The Chatham Film Club/FilmColumbia Film Festival, a nationally recognized film event, known as “Cannes in the Hudson.” She continues today as an active participant in film-related programs in Delray Beach. She is the author of Tar Beach Memories, a screenplay about growing up in the Bronx. Ross is currently working on a stage play exploring the relationship with her mother, set in the safety of movie theaters, over a period of 40 years.
LILA is about the experiences and complexities of coming of age, complicated by parents forever scarred by the Holocaust.
Q: What motivated you to write this book?
LILA is a story that has been with me for a very long time. As an only child of survivors, I was always privy tostories told at the Friday night card games my parents would host with other survivors. I would have my place ofhonor seated on a small plastic chair and table next to my mother. While I colored with crayons, I listened to their stories about the camps. Then later at night, while my parents thought I was asleep, they would have their quiettalks, sometimes interrupted by my mother’s tears. As I got older, I started to have my own stories, experiences, fantasies, dreams, and nightmares. Too afraid to share them with anyone, I collected them and put them into an imaginary suitcase. Until I was an adult, I realized how lonely growing up was and how difficult it was to live with secrets.
Q: Did you find it challenging to write such a personal story?
There was a lot of fact checking and cross referencing of events and timelines using literature previously published The actual challenge was trying to figure out how I was going to write Lila. Once I decided to use Point of View style for each of the three characters, it flowed.
Q: Was there anything you learned or took away from the experience of working on LILA?
The benefits of being older are that there is little that I am afraid of telling. I can now be truthful without fear, and that is incredibly freeing.
Advertisements
Q: Can you tell us a little more about the picture on the cover?
Once I was mentally committed to writing Lila, the memory of the cover photo immediately came to mind. Aftersearching through my mother’s many albums, I found it and knew at once that nothing else would do. Theexpression on the girls’ faces spoke to me in volumes.
Q: What kind of feedback are you getting from readers?
Rewarding and incredibly surprising! I have had readers of all ages and backgrounds. The emails, discussions, book groups that I have engaged with have taught me more about how coming of age, regardless of the history or experience, is relatable to everyone.

Q: What inspires you to write?
My mother. Growing up, I craved to know what her family was like, who she was before the war, what herdreams were, was she happy, sad, and ever in love? In 2001, my mother said she was ready to speak. Three dayslater, I flew to Miami, where she lived. For two weeks, I recorded her thoughts and memories. We cried and laughed. On the day I was ready to go home to New York, we spoke about my coming back in a month tocontinue our conversations. As I was packing, my mother put on the television, and we watched in horror the Twin Towers come down. It was the morning of 9/11. My mother remained silent as we watched the tragic events of the day. In my heart, I believe it was the day that she started to die. My mother passed away in April 2002, a month after her 80th birthday.
Q: What was the most challenging part about writing this book?
To be true to me.
Q: What is on your current reading list?
Re-reading The Holocaust Kid by Sonia Pilcer, originally published in 2001, the first book I read on “2G” Second-generation. Next will be Unstoppable by Joshua M. Greene and Hamnet by Maggie O’ Farrell.
Advertisements
Q: What is your next writing project?
Currently, I am working on a screenplay adaption of LILA and a stage play about my mother and me at the movies, the one place that she felt comfortable enough revealing herself to me, little by little, film by film.
Q: Can you provide your web address and links to your social media profiles for the audience?
I have learned since becoming a writer that there is a fine line between truth and fiction. Lila is a story that is both. Growing up is at best complex; growing up as children of Holocaust survivors is even more so. Some second-generation children could escape the shadow of their parent’s suffering; for others, their parent’s experiences led them unknowingly into early maturity.

Abigail Issacs is a gifted astronomer. But the loss of her father places her in a perilious situation that requries help from her brother, who has been away at sea. When she receives a tragic reply, Abigail finds herself in the charge of Lieutenant Raphael Gabay and pursuing a different ambition altogether.
Trupp has done it again! She artfully blends beloved characters from Jane Austen’s original writings with her own inspired storyline, creating something truly wonderful. Abigail Issacs is developed beautifully in this emotional story. Trupp brings a refreshing representation of a Jewish heroine to Regency era literature. The imigary in her writing transports the reader into the story. I was engrossed from the first page and couldn’t put this book down.
I would like to thank the author for an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. Celestial Persuasion is scheduled for release on June 30th.

Waiting to be Collected by Dorit Oliver-Wolff BEM
Dorit Oliver-Wolff is a Serbian Holocaust survivor. She was nine years old when she was liberated at the end of the Second World War. She later became a successful international recording artist and public figure. Today she is an author and motivational speaker as well as a recipient of the British Empire Medal for her dedication to Holocaust education.
Betty has her eyes firmly fixed onto the footpath that leads to the front door of The Happy Valley Residential Home for the Elderly.
Her big chair is placed near the window, as it always is. Not only is it in a prime position to spot when her son would be coming to visit her, but it had a most wonderful view of this palm tree. The front garden had been very cleverly landscaped to make you feel as if you were in the Mediterranean. Betty was never sure if the red flowers in the palm tree, were real or plastic. This is BETTY’S CHAIR! No one, but no one, is every permitted to sit in it. Never, ever.
MY CHAIR, MY PLACE. All residents have a personal chair. It’s a taboo to sit in anyone else’s chair.
Residents had had bitter fights over THEIR chair – even physical fights with the perpetrator if anyone dared to use the wrong chair.
The chair is the only thing that the resident can call their own – MY chair.
Betty is a small, immaculately clean, frail lady. She likes her clothes to be colour coded to match her white hair. She has a perm every six weeks and her toe and fingernails are manicured at the same time.
Betty is friendly – but not too friendly. She doesn’t want to get too close to others. She likes to exchange small talk but believes she is only here for a short time, so doesn’t want to get too involved or make friends during her short stay in this residential home.
Betty has six grown up children. Her husband, Charlie, was in the Army and was killed during the Second World War.
Her eldest son, Fred, was 14 and the youngest, Charlie Junior, was just 2.
She had four daughters, Margaret (Maggie for short), Mary, Doris and Kate.
She married Charlie when she was just 18 years old and he was 22. Charlie had a good job as a local postman and was paid regular wages and he also worked at the local butcher shop in the afternoon. This gave them a good income so they could put down a deposit on a small cottage with a small garden where Betty planted plenty of vegetables and she had two hens which gave them fresh eggs every day.
Betty was busying herself knitting baby clothes and preparing for the big day when Fred would arrive. She was an excellent cook and could bake too, which she learned from her mother’s sister, Ellie, who brought Betty up as her mother died when she was just 10 years old.
Betty had three older brothers who were each taken in by different members of the family, all over the country. They all lost touch.
Not much was known about Betty’s father. Every time she asked Auntie Ellie about him, she was told, “Best not to mention him. He was no good. My poor sister, she had to bring up you and three hungry boys all on her own. Your Mum went into service and they provided a small cottage in the grounds. That is where she looked after you lot.”
Auntie Ellie was kind to Betty. She never had any children of her own. Her husband, Tom, was a clerk in a factory. They were well off. Betty learned all that she needed to know about how to bring up a family.
Betty went to school and became a nurse. She was petite with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes. She was an accomplished seamstress and made her own clothes. This came in handy when she moved into her first home. She made all the curtains and covers for the furniture and clothed her daughters, which she enjoyed.
When the war ended and Charlie sadly didn’t return, she had a small Widow’s Pension from the Army. The children went to local schools and stayed out of trouble, which made life easier as it’s very difficult to bring up six children without a father.
After the children left home, Betty went back to nursing in a local hospital. This meant that she could keep her little cottage, which she loved, as the mortgage had been paid off and she could afford to live comfortably.
Her children and grandchildren visited her regularly and at Christmas and Easter she always had a full house, which reminded her of the times when they were all living happily together.
All the children had good jobs and married well so they were all independent and financially secure.
Except for Charlie Junior, who found it difficult to manage on the commission he received as an estate agent. His wife worked as a waitress and they had two teenage boys.
Charlie was a very loving son who would pop in regularly to see his Mum for a cuppa.
Betty was now 86 years old, fit for her age and active. Charlie suggested that she should sell her little cottage so he could buy a bigger house where she could have her own accommodation and could also be part of the family. This would make sense as he would make sure that she would be looked after as she got older and might need help.
The rest of the family agreed that this was a good idea because most of them lived too far away to help if needed.

Betty agreed to sell her beautiful little cottage and it was sold within no time at all.
There was a delay with the purchase of the house that Charlie and his wife wanted to buy so they all agreed that Betty would go into a residential home until the house was ready for them all to move into.
Betty had a basic room in the residential home but she didn’t mind as this was supposed to be for just a few weeks. Charlie would come regularly to visit her and would check with her about what kind of decoration she wanted in her part of the house. He brought in the house plan which she would constantly show everybody and tell them how lucky she felt to be moving in with her son and his family.
Betty positioned herself in her favourite chair, as usual, her eyes fixed on the footpath to the front door waiting for Charlie to appear but all she had was a message from one of the carers saying that Charlie was sorry that he couldn’t come today because he was too busy.
Days turned to weeks; weeks turned to months. Even the telephone messages seemed to have stopped.
As time passed, everyone noticed that Betty had lost the spring in her step.
Many months had passed, Betty had stopped counting. It could even be years by now. She often fell asleep in her chair after her eyes became heavy, looking into the distance, hoping to see Charlie coming down the path again.
When people asked her how she was her reply would be, “Fine. I’m waiting to be collected.”

In the midst of the Covid-19 closure, the author had plenty of time to go through the photos and documents of his family. He found his grandfather’s soldier certificate and the date of his enlistment. While browsing online, he came across a group of relatives of the Israeli POW from WW2. he discovered the name of the unit in which his grandfather served (Port Operation Unit 1039). Interestingly enough, his captain kept a war diary until his capture. Through the stories and the dates in the diary, he was able to trace the route that his grandfather took until his capture. All he had left to do, was to dive into the depths of the research and the stories of the prisoners in order to develop the plot of the book. For the author it was definitely a real once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The journey of a man who sacrifices everything to protect and provide for his family amidst the outbreak of WWII.
Q: What inspired you to write this book?
Throughout the pandemic, I had plenty of time to go through old photos, relics and documents acquired from my family. I came across my grandfather’s soldier certificate from the war along with a diary that captured his experiences as a Prisoner of War (POW). My grandfather was a very serious and private man who never shared these details with his family. After reading his story, I knew I had something to share with the rest of the world.
Q: What sort of research went into the writing of this book?
There was a lot of fact checking and cross referencing of events and timelines using literature previously published about the war and about Prisoners of War. I had read other stories of soldiers who were also captured at war which allowed me to compare and draw similarities between that of my grandfather’s. There was a lot of historical and biographical reading about the time period in Israel and Germany.
Q: Do you have a favorite character in the book?
Abraham is my favourite character due to his resilience and strength to never give up and keep pushing until his goals are achieved.
Advertisements
Q: Did you find it challenging to work on a story with a personal connection for you?
Yes, it was challenging to separate the need to create a captivating or “Hollywood-esque” plotline from just sharing personal stories my grandfather documented. To make it interesting for people other than my family to read, I really needed to delve and expand the characters, events, and conversations and build up the action.
Q: Did you enjoy the creative process of developing the book trailer?
Yes, absolutely. This was my first book and it was a big learning curve to navigate but I learned so much from the process and have such an appreciation for every step involved in the creative process.

Q: What inspires you to write?
I’ve always been a creative and imaginative person. I’ve written hundreds of reports throughout my career but never a story or book that required me to reflect, process and meticulously analyze details for others to read as pleasure. I think I am inspired by the challenge to write for an audience and use my creativity to engage and draw readers from around the world and share untold stories.
Never give up on your dreams because if there is a will there is always a way. We all have that inner strength and resilience to persevere and we need to believe in ourselves, no matter how hard, to make it happen.
Q: What is on your current reading list?
1) Beneath a Scarlet Sky by Mark Sullivan
2) Company man by Joseph Finder
3) Paranoia by Joseph Finder

This is the second installment in Bazant’s travel memoirs. This is a prequel to her first book, Nine Years in Bangkok: Lessons Learned. In 1991, Bazant, along with her husband and two teenagers, took a “hardship” posting to Islamabad. The book chronicles her family’s five years in Pakistan, adjusting to a new culture as well as navigating the perils of flash floods, power cuts, and bombings.
I was hooked from the first page. Bazant is a gifted storyteller, engaging all of the senses in her vivid descriptions of sights, sounds, smells, and tastes. The writing is very conversational, giving the reader the feeling of sitting down over a cup of coffee and getting to know a new friend. Bazant provides wonderful insight into the history, culture, politics, and religion of modern Pakistan that broadens the reader’s understanding of the environment she and her family were living in.
I thoroughly enjoyed Bazant’s memoir and look forward to reading more from her.

What a perfect way to pass an afternoon. Each story in this collection is emotional and powerful, as distictive as the students who wrote them. I found myself inspired by their bravery in sharing such a deeply personal part of themselves.
I’d like to thank editor, Penina Shtauber, for the free copy of this anthology in exchange for my honest review.

When Jamie Gibson’s mother passes away unexpectedly, he finds himself traveling to meet an uncle he was unaware he had. Jamie’s uncle makes his living as a gunner, providing waterfowl to New York’s high-end restaurants. He’s also married to a much younger woman. Jamie soon discovered his uncle’s dark side. The story explores the immigrant experience in America, in the early 1900s.
Finan is a gifted storyteller, painting a vivid picture of Bay Shore, NY. The descriptions transported me to the scene. The character character development is incredibly strong and I found the relationships between the characters wonderfully complex. The plot kept me guessing from beginning to end. I found the charming setting an interesting contrast with darkness of characters.
This is my first book by G. Finan and I look forward to reading more.

More About the Author
Hello, I have worked to be an artist for most of my life. I am an Author, Singer/Songwriter and a Fine Artist. I grew up studying all different types of art, concentrating mainly on pen and inks, and eventually oil painting as my mediums of choice. I have won many awards for my artwork over the years. I have a great love of music, having grown up in a household where music was played almost constantly, mainly my father’s opera records at a very high volume. Having written and sung music from an early age, these days I participate online in different music project with musicians all around the world using a music service called Kompoz. I have created music with people in over twenty countries in a wide variety of styles. My music can be found on several streaming sites such as Spotify, Pandora, and Soundcloud. Though I have written poetry and some fiction over the years, The Rain Drinkers is my first attempt at publishing. It is my second book, the first book was not published for personal reasons. Originally from the town of Bay Shore, NY on Long Island. I live with my wife in Orlando, Fl. You can view my Artist webpage at https://gfinan.com The original story for The Rain Drinkers was inspired from a very old photograph I came across in a library years ago. I was looking for reference material for an art project I was thinking of doing when I came across this very old photo. The picture is very much as described in the opening of the book. That picture and the idea of the story I saw in it stayed with me for decades. Over the years I made a couple of attempts to start writing it but was always interrupted for one reason or another. Finally, I did make a start and let nothing stop me until it was completed. The story changed greatly from the original tale I had in my head to what it is now. The original idea centered almost completely on only the three main characters. But I felt the storyline was too similar to James Cain’s “The Postman Always Rings Twice”, which I suppose was one of the main reasons I kept putting off writing it. Eventually, when I did start writing it, the story poured forth naturally as I hoped it would. I hope you enjoy the story. I really enjoyed writing the book and especially writing about a town for which I still hold great Love and wonderful memories, though it is many years since I have lived there. G. Finan
